  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Your backyard sounds really cool.

Sounds cool and looks even cooler. Did your two fathers play together, leaving the mothers to entertain each other? Did you and Amanda ever need to intervene and remind anyone to share? Or did the four parents sit in a little circle and gossip about their two lovely daughters, which sort of edged into bragging: "Claire just got back from a trip to China; you should see her photographs."
"Amanda may go to China next year. We don't want her to feel rushed, after all. Right now, she's concentrating on her art, and of course, her extremely excelled reading level."

No, we all sat around. The Dads discussed house building briefly, while the mothers gardening. The subject of dogs came up. Everyone discussed politics, though it was my mother and I who ended up yelling (but that's usual). The conversation devolved a little into the third bottle of wine. China came up briefly, but I got sidetracked. I've been told conversing with my family is like playing tackle football while sprinting.

Very nice! Glad it was a nice visit.
